BLC owner and award-winning sculptor Judith Enright began producing tile and pottery in 1993 and started her studio in San Jose, California, the following year. Her work can be found in local Bay area venues, and her commissioned works are in the homes of collectors from around the world. She is the author of Clay Speak: Terms, Tips & Techniques for the New Clay Artist. In 1999, Judith began looking at ways her studio could enhance awareness in the ceramic arts through education. Her mission: To provide high-quality, reasonably-priced classes with a focus on individual learning and with a fluid schedule to accommodate her students busy lives. After outfitting the studio and developing its initial programs, she began offering classes in 2001, building each curriculum around what a student wants to learn and limiting any class to a 3-person maximum. Courses at BLC include an array of free benefits while still keeping the cost comparable to that of large commercial studios. Although the facility, programs and services have evolved since then, Black Leopard Clayware is still a pottery studio where students can learn what they want, when they want. Judiths popular pottery classes are available to artists with all levels of experience, and include wheel-throwing, handbuilding, sculpting, decorating, and glazing techniques. Her line of other services includes kiln rental, ceramic repair/restoration, glaze-mixing, and more. The studio also offers custom-designed group clay events for corporate and private customers. A studio membership program was launched in 2007 in response to students wanting to return after their classes were over, and the program was extended to independent clay artists wanting a place to work.
