Lace was already made and commercialised in the 16th century, no wonder that this artistic craft made Belgium famous throughout the whole world. Antwerp, Bruges and Brussels were then as now the most important lace centers of the country.Brussels specialised in pillow-lace with cut thread, whereas Antwerp was renowned for its pillow-lace with continuing thread. Most existing pillow-laces stem from these two types which were refined and improved. Bruges became famous for its Binche lace, especially the point de fée (fairy lace) or toveressewerk (magician lace) which is unique in its kind. The flower work is still very appreciated as an ornament for furniture. Of the once famous Brussels pillow-lace only the fine Duchesse has remained. In East Flanders the lace production developed as a needle technique, which was mostly used for very fine cloth and was known under the name of Brussels lace, though the terms Renaissance or Luxeuil are more familiar.
